I ran this as part of my news briefs last week, but it needs to have a post of its own to reiterate the point that lgbts need to pay attention to what's being pushed in the media. You think Tony Perkins and the Family Research Council would be getting as much respect if it were an openly racist or anti-Semitic group?

To be fair, since Southern Poverty Law Center classified FRC as an anti-LGBT "hate group", they have struggled to get much mainstream media coverage (although Fox News, realizing it has a homophobic viewership base, seems to love them), as several of the leading TV networks including NBC and PBS won't even consider their opinions, claiming they don't ask the KKK about race relations, nor will they ask FRC about LBGT issues. However, CBS really screwed up in inviting Tony Perkins back, and the network got a very LOUD earful, to the point that the network was forced to acknowledge the classification as a "hate group". Until it stops (and it will likely never stop on Fox News), activists must continue to pressure respectable media outlets not to consider FRC statements on these matters because they are not as they like to call themselves, a "conservative" or "Christian" group ... they are a hate group.
You know what's interesting about what you said? When I took my religions of the West class the instructor, who was Jewish brought up FRC as an Antisemitic group. And in fact, when I raised my hand to tell him I knew them for their anti-gay activity he said argued the point that they were more active against Jews than gays. This wasn't all that long ago either, maybe 4 years max. So, you know, the thing is. I don't think it's about calling them out on being a hate group. I think people know that full well. I think they've become okay with the idea of legitimizing a hate group. They couch it in terms that sound nice, but the truth is people know full well what it is and are fine with it.
