Are gays too angry? Ask Tracey Morgan, NOM, and the Catholic Church

You will forgive for dispensing with the usual news briefs today, but this has been on my mind:

You probably heard about the Tracey Morgan controversy. If not, let TMZ elucidate you on the situation:

According to reports, Morgan took the stage at the Ryman Auditorium (pictured above) and went off about gays -- saying, "Gays need to quit being p**sies and not be whining about something as insignificant as bullying."

He added, "Gay is something that kids learn from the media and programming."

When talking about the possibility of his son being gay -- Tracy said he "better talk to me like a man and not in a gay voice or I'll pull out a knife and stab that little n**ger to death."

Afterward, Tracy told the crowd, "I don't "f*cking care if I piss off some gays, because if they can take a f*cking d**k up their ass ... they can take a f*cking joke."

After the performance, the Ryman Auditorium issued a statement on the performance saying, "The Ryman Auditorium regrets that people were offended by statements made by Tracy Morgan during his June 3 appearance."

The statement continues, "The Ryman does not control the content presented by people appearing on its stage, nor does it endorse any of the views of, or statements made by, such persons."

It's not the first time Morgan has ignited controversy over homphobic material -- back in 2009, a bunch of people reportedly walked out of his show at Carnegie Hall after he said being gay was a "choice."

So far, no comment from Morgan's camp.

TMZ later added the following:

TMZ spoke with someone in attendance at the Ryman Auditorium ... who tells us Morgan's entire act was filled with offensive gay jokes ... explaining, "It was the worst thing I've ever heard ... so not funny."

As we previously reported, Morgan's June 3rd performance ignited a firestorm of controversy -- after he "joked" that he would "stab" his son for acting gay.

It's ironic that the Morgan controversy comes in the week where we have heard about an upcoming article in which a group of religious right figures are complaining that the lgbt community are somewhat "mean and intolerant."

And also during these statewide anti-marriage equality initiatives in which the National Organization for Marriage, the Catholic Church, and ignorant self-righteous ministers are trying to paint themselves as the last line of resistance against a so-called radical gay horde allegedly using threats and bullying to get their point across.

But I have question which this recent situation with Morgan has placed in my mind.

In the span of less than two months, lgbts have been accused of trying to steal the innocence of children, been described as worthy of death, have been painted as the aggressors trying to destroy American values in a huge upcoming prayer event in Texas, accused of pedophilia, bestiality, and the consuming of urine and feces.

Lastly, we have been subjected to arguments by a religious group who wants to make it okay to take our tax dollars in order to declare our households as unfit to raise children.

The sad thing that some folks will take all of these things into account and claim that we brought these things on ourselves. Apparently we are expected to allow these things to happen without an argument or any words of disagreement.

I ask you - just who are the real bullies here? Or better yet, if these things were happening to you, wouldn't you get angry too?

Now, I'm no fan of Tracy Morgan. I thought he was terrible on SNL, being one of the worst offenders of "Obviously reading cue cards and delivering wooden jokes" that show has ever seen, BUT...

Reading his 'jokes', I have to wonder why Lisa Lampinelli and Maragaret Cho can get away with similar jokes. Is it because they're female, and thus, we can imagine them as fag hags? Is it because of their outspoken off-stage support of the gay community? is color a factor? Truth is, nothing Tracy Morgan has said (that I have seen) strikes me as any different than any other shock comic the gay community embraces.

So I just have to wonder what the difference is in this case.

Josh, I have heard Lisa's and Margaret's routines and I have NEVER heard either threaten a potential gay child with violence nor any of the other vile things which came from Morgan's mouth.

I'm going to have to SHARPLY disagree with you here.

Um..... Josh, are you completely out of touch with reality? Lisa and Margeret are very PRO gay. Even in their routines. They have NEVER ONCE "jokingly" advocated violence against gays or even come anywhere close to calling it a choice. What ARE you smoking sir? I'd like to know so I can add it to my "Do not touch with a 30 foot pole" list.

Frankly, I'm tired of comedy that denigrates people! So long as we celebrate comics who mine misogynist, racist
and hetereosexist humor for cheap laughs, we're going to have incidents like the one with Tracy Morgan. When a society allows crudeness and rudeness to become the basis of its popular culture, marginalized communities are inevitably going to suffer. Our problem is, too many of us act like the revolution has already occurred. If it had, the world would act, look and sound a Helluva lot different than it does now.

So apparently he did apologize after:

Not that that's enough...

"The Ryman Auditorium regrets that people were offended by statements made by Tracy Morgan during his June 3 appearance."

Perfect example of a non-apology -- translated:

"We regret very, very deeply that there was some bad PR over this."
